OTTAWA, Feb. 25, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister for La Francophonie, presented seven Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals to outstanding Canadians who have contributed to improving the lives of Veterans.

"I am honoured to present these worthy individuals with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal," said Minister Blaney. "Through their actions, they have helped Canadians recognize the incredible service, contributions and sacrifices of Canada's Veterans. These deserving recipients are Canadians who care for their communities and who have helped improve the lives of our Veterans all across the country."

The recipients are:

Maureen G. Bianchini-Purvis, Edmonton, Alberta
Alfie Bojalil, Carleton Place, Ontario
Russell K. Girling, Calgary, Alberta
Lizzy Hoyt, Edmonton, Alberta
  Greg Owen, Grimsby, Ontario
Daniel Rodrique, Niagara Falls, Ontario
Jordie Yeo, Nepean, Ontario

A new commemorative medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country. At the same time, it serves to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. During the year of celebrations, 60,000 deserving Canadians will be recognized.

The Government of Canada encourages all Canadians to recognize the courage and sacrifices of the brave men and women who have served our country. To learn more about Veterans Affairs Canada's programs, services and funding programs, visit
