Asda Money Reveals the Most Common Winter Car Breakdown Call Outs
Asda Money reveals how winter weather can wreak havoc with road conditions, highlighting the need for motorists to put adequate breakdown cover in place

LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 02/19/13 -- Research has shown that rain, sleet, snow or fog was responsible for 1,786(1) reported road casualties in 2011, with slippery roads due to weather playing a part in 13,420 road casualties in the same year.

With the MET Office issuing severe weather warnings for several parts of the UK in recent months(2), Asda Money looks at some of the most common winter breakdown call outs.

Flat batteries

Leaving your radio or lights on may deplete your car battery, so it essential this is checked on a regular basis to prevent your running into trouble on the road. Having a set of jump leads on hand will also ensure that you can re-start your battery should you encounter any problems.

Flat tyres

As with batteries, checking your tyre pressure at regular intervals will help to avoid flat tyres and blowouts. Visual checks are also key as items, such as glass, getting caught in tyres could lead to punctures. Carrying a spare tyre is good practise year-round, but is particularly important during winter months.

Lost keys

In the rush to get from point A to B drivers could find themselves accidently locking themselves out of vehicles, or misplacing their keys. While a vehicle locksmith should be able to help you address the problem if you have lost your keys.

Running out of fuel

Motorists may end up running on empty if they have underestimated the amount of fuel needed for their journey. Fortunately this problem is one the drivers can avoid, and it's crucial that the fuel gauge doesn't read below a quarter of a tank, even if motorists are making a short journey.

Electrical and mechanical failures

Electrical faults and problems ranging from spark plug failures to faulty starter motors could act to stop drivers in their tracks when they are out on the road. Ensuring your vehicle is regularly serviced can help to detect these problems before winter weather sets in.

The Environmental Transport Association (ETA) estimates that drivers could be hit with a typical call-out charge of around GBP 100 plus a charge of GBP 1 per mile(3) should their car need to be towed.

In contrast, Asda Breakdown Cover offers home start, roadside assistance and UK recovery all for just GBP 70 a year(4).
