Fujitsu, a leading provider of business, information technology, and communications solutions, today announced the FLASHWAVE CDS Micro Packet Optical Networking Platform (Packet ONP), for Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching. Built on in-house designed OTN technology for superior performance, the FLASHWAVE CDS 6.1 complies with industry standards while exceeding the competition by providing 80G of non-blocking (any to any) ODU0/1/2 switching within a 2RU rack space – the highest available density in the industry.

Fujitsu now offers an OTN switch that supports the transport of Ethernet and SONET services with the same level of robustness and functionality for which the company’s earlier products are known. Many Service Providers, including those serving enterprise customers and those providing cellular backhaul services, must transport different types of data ranging from legacy SONET to transparent Ethernet. OTN is the ideal technology for this converged network and the FLASHWAVE CDS 6.1 with its switching capabilities will prove to be a valuable tool for those Service Providers. The switching capabilities allow the OTN unit of the FLASHWAVE CDS to not only act as a capable Muxponder, but also provides the functionality for versatile protection switching schemes, hairpinning applications, and distributed switching applications, thereby providing smoother operations for managing and troubleshooting the network.
The OTN unit has a wide range of pluggable optics options including an 88 channel Full Band Tuneable XFP that allows the user to bypass transponders when co-located with ROADMs for significant Capital Expenditure (Capex) savings. This ideal solution is easily designed, provisioned, and operated, utilizing Fujitsu’s NETSMART Management complex that will decrease the Carrier’s needed Operational Expenditure (Opex) investment.
“Several vendors offer OTN encapsulation but Fujitsu is unique in that we have invested in our own intellectual property to ensure customers receive maximum value,” said Rod Naphan, Senior Vice President of Product and Strategic Planning, Fujitsu Network Communications. “Developing our OTN technology in-house means the FLASHWAVE CDS 6.1 provides performance and reliability that, while adhering to industry standards, provides additional added value compared to ‘off the shelf‘ components. This is particularly important when dealing with services that cross multiple technologies, e.g., Ethernet/SONET/OTN. Fujitsu has a long standing tradition of optical integration and OTN is the latest proof point. We will continue to bring value to our customer base by leveraging our OTN investment across the Packet-Optical portfolio, increasing commonality thereby lowering Capex and Opex costs.”
The design of the FLASHWAVE CDS 6.1 incorporates unique OTN functionality as part of Fujitsu’s advanced technology that can save the Service Provider significant operational costs. One example of this is the ability to act as a Gateway Network Element to the downstream FNC SONET family of devices, while being transparent to other SONET devices that are unmanaged. This can save the Service Provider from having to backhaul the SONET management from a distant site, providing better visibility and operations savings. It also incorporates programmable hardware for adaptability as industry standards evolve, the Fujitsu platform can evolve with them through simple firmware updates. Rather than having to purchase new equipment to meet new industry requirements, customers may simply download the latest firmware.
The FLASHWAVE CDS 6.1 is fully environmentally hardened and can be deployed anywhere including an OSP cabinet or up on a telephone pole. It has a 19”, 2RU, 300mm footprint and doesn’t require other elements such as external fans or baffles. The CDS family of I/O units provides a full set of functionality from Ethernet aggregation with full traffic management, to simple Ethernet over SONET, to being a distributed OTN switch. This versatility lets the Service Providers install a simple infrastructure and then select the appropriate units to fulfill the service, all within a very modest budget.
