Niklas Bjorkman wrote: Firstly I agree with your conclusion. NewSQL takes the best of the traditional databases and NoSQL databases to combine the benefits of both worlds. I do not agree that NewSQL vendors focus on giving scale-out features to transactional data. The NewSQL market is focusing on giving true ACID support combined with extreme performance, stepping away from the traditional relational structures in databases. A lot of developers appreciate the ease of accessing data using SQL and I think we will see more and more databases supporting standard SQL. As you said - NewSQL databases often maintain the...

UK Regulators and Ad Industry to Discuss New Online Privacy Rules Enforcement on 21 February

Evidon, the global leader in revealing the invisible web, today announced that it will host a webinar on 21 February that brings together key leaders from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) for an insider’s look at the two fundamental initiatives designed to empower consumer privacy online: the advertising industry’s privacy controls for OBA; and the ePrivacy Directive, EU law that is being adopted by all EU member states.

Part of Evidon’s long-running “Get With The Programme” series, the webinar is entitled “Regulation and Self-Regulation Come Together for Consumers and Business,” and will feature:

  • David Evans, Group Manager of Business and Industry, Information Commissioner's Office (ICO)
  • Hayley Fletcher, Code Policy Executive, Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP)
  • Nick Stringer, Director of Regulatory Affairs, Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) UK
  • Katie Paxie, Solicitor, Field Fisher Waterhouse
  • Damian Scragg, Managing Director, EMEA, Evidon

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is enforcing new rules that provide users with transparency into, and control over online behavioural advertising (OBA) from 4 February, 2013, and other ASA-equivalents across Europe will soon follow. Adoption of the Self-Regulatory “AdChoices” Programme, which enables businesses to serve the AdChoices notice in online ads, is one reliable method to ensure that those companies empower consumers in a way that meets the Standards, and protect themselves. Part 1 of this event will help attendees understand how to get started.

The event will also clarify the position of businesses in relation to the ePrivacy Directive, the EU law that is being transposed by each EU member state. While there has been significant confusion in the industry around both initiatives—from what’s involved in complying with each, to which actually applies to business, to whether there is interplay between them—the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is adding some clarity. Although it has stated it will remain focused on enforcement of the ePrivacy Directive, the ICO believes that the AdChoices Programme can work as part of an overall “ecology of solutions” to facilitate compliance.

“With an open panel discussion among the key players in the issue, this event will clear things up substantially and help businesses understand what they need to do to be in good standing with both initiatives,” stated Damian Scragg, Managing Director, EMEA, Evidon.
