OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 01/22/13 -- Canada is providing 39,000 blankets to 15,000 families suffering from unprecedented cold weather in Bangladesh through immediate assistance from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), announced the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation. Canada is providing this support through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. "Canada is responding quickly and effectively to provide relief to the people of Bangladesh - especially children and the elderly - who are suffering through extreme weather conditions," said Minister Fantino. Severe cold weather has resulted in the deaths of at least 72 people in the normally tropical Bangladesh. Other consequences include an increase in respiratory illnesses in the affected areas, as well as significant crop losses, with an expected longer-term negative impact on the economic situation in Bangladesh. Many of the communities currently suffering from severe cold weather were also affected by seasonal flooding three times in 2012. The Government of Canada will continue to monitor the situation to ensure humanitarian needs are met. Follow us on Twitter : @CIDA_CA Contacts: Web 2.0 Latest News
