Niklas Bjorkman wrote: Firstly I agree with your conclusion. NewSQL takes the best of the traditional databases and NoSQL databases to combine the benefits of both worlds. I do not agree that NewSQL vendors focus on giving scale-out features to transactional data. The NewSQL market is focusing on giving true ACID support combined with extreme performance, stepping away from the traditional relational structures in databases. A lot of developers appreciate the ease of accessing data using SQL and I think we will see more and more databases supporting standard SQL. As you said - NewSQL databases often maintain the...

Lanzarote: Where Rain Never Stops Play

LONDON, January 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

The Met Office recently revealed that 2012 was the wettest year in England since records began in 1910. On 27 December, the average rainfall across England (1,095.8mm) had already surpassed the previous record of 1,093mm in 2000, with downpours continuing right up until the end of the year.

For Brits looking to escape the dreaded drizzle, Lanzarote  in the Canary Islands is a fantastic choice - the average annual rainfall is a mere 140mm, which means the only umbrella you're likely to need is a sun parasol! Lanzarote not only enjoys the lowest rainfall of its neighbouring islands, but average January daytime temperatures reach a pleasant 20°C. Here is a brief look at some of the island's other charms.

Volcanic scenery

Lanzarote is known as the 'island of 100 volcanoes' although it actually has around 300 volcanic peaks. The island's extraordinary scenery is a result of eruptions in the 17th and 18th century, and today the solidified lava streams and amazing rock formations offer visitors a spectacular lunar landscape to explore. The highlight is the longest volcanic tunnel in the world, the Atlantida Tunnel, which extends for over 7km.

The island is still home to one active volcano called Timanfaya ('Fire Mountain'). Head to the Islote de Hilario for a bus tour of the volcanic landscape, or an alternative option is the free guided walk at the park's visitor centre at Mancha Blanca, called the Ruta de Tremesana.

Water sports

As Lanzarote is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, you can enjoy water sports such as sailing at the yacht marina Puerto Calero and parascending and water skiing at the main resorts. Those who like diving and snorkelling should visit the pristine coastline in Punta Mujeres and enjoy the crystal-clear waters, with their abundance of colourful marine life.

Accommodation

There is a range of accommodation to suit all budgets and tastes in Lanzarote, including a variety of luxury complexes. Families and couples may want to relax in the quieter regions of Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise, whilst groups of friends may prefer to stay at the lively resort of Puerto Del Carmen for plenty of buzzing nightlife.

Cosmos offers great value deals on Lanzarote holiday packages, view prices starting from just £182 per person at http://www.cosmos.co.uk/canary-islands/lanzarote/holidays.
