Taking Stock of New Year's Resolutions: How to Invest in Healthy Foods, Weight Loss and More Family Time
Following Through on Resolutions Can Be Good For Your Investment Portfolio, But So Can Slipping Up

SAN MATEO, Calif., Dec. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Motif Investing, the company that pioneered ideas-based stock investing, has analyzed how common New Year's resolutions might translate into potential investment ideas for 2013. The result: sticking to self-improvement plans like dieting or being socially conscious would have delivered you solid profits over the past year, but so would drinking beer, gambling and gorging on fast food.

Motif Investing offers customers the ability to invest in motifs, portfolios of stocks linked by a common theme, such as tablet computing, global inflation or home improvement. The company, inspired by the upcoming New Year's Day holiday and the tradition of making personal resolutions, recently examined the year-to-date returns of several motifs that reflect common end-of-year declarations.

These included the "Fighting Fat" motif, which contains shares of companies like Weight Watchers International and Medifast, but also pharmaceutical firms making weight-loss drugs and diabetes medications, as well as the "Healthy and Tasty" motif focused on organic and natural food producers. Fighting Fat is up nearly 20% this year, while Healthy and Tasty has logged a gain of 14.8%.

"Clearly, doing good and being good can have the added benefit of enhancing your investment portfolio," said Hardeep Walia, co-founder and CEO of Motif Investing. "Unfortunately, we also found that our "Seven Deadly Sins" motif logged big gains year-to-date. So being gluttonous, greedy and slothful can pay dividends, too."

The Seven Deadly Sins motif, which tracks stocks including McDonald's, Philip Morris, and Las Vegas Sands, has notched an impressive 23.6% gain so far in 2012.

Other, more virtuous motifs that could be tied to resolutions, and their year-to-date returns, include:

  • Home Improvement. Resolved to fix up your house this year? This motif, tracking home-improvement, furniture and appliance stocks, is up 36.3%.
  • Child's Play. Many of us want to work less and focus more on our kids. This index of children's media-and-entertainment companies, toy makers, kids' clothiers and baby-formula manufacturers has risen 18.8% year to date.
  • Socially Responsible. This motif includes companies that are advocates of the environment, consumer protection, human rights and diversity. It has returned 15.5% so far this year.

Investing in securities involves risk, you should be aware of prior to making an investment decision. An investment in individual stocks, or a collection of stocks focused on a particular theme or idea, such as a motif, may be subject to increased risk of price fluctuation over more diversified holdings due to adverse developments which can affect a particular industry or sector. Data as of 12/20/2012.
