The season got under way on Aug. 30 with 12 of those teams calling new conferences home. Also, four schools moved up to the FBS ranks in 2012: Massachusetts, South Alabama, Texas State and UTSA. Boise State, TCU and Texas State played in expanded stadiums in 2012, while California returned to a renovated stadium in Berkeley after playing the 2011 campaign in San Francisco.

College football is one of the most popular sports, and it is the only one that includes teams that average more than 100,000 fans per game. In fact, 11 NCAA football teams average more fans per game than any NFL franchise. With all of this passion and interest in the sport, it comes as no surprise that tickets for the BCS Championship are among the best sellers among ticket companies. Fans of the game are among the most dedicated of any American sports fans, and they have been showing it by picking up tickets for the BCS Championship already. The game will kick off at 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 7. The host facility will be Sun Life Stadium, a stadium that also plays host to Miami Hurricanes and Miami Dolphins home games. It is noteworthy to also consider that 11 NCAA football squads averaged more fans per game in 2011 than any of the NFL teams. Michigan led the way with an average attendance figure of 112,179. The Wolverines were followed, in order, by Ohio State, Alabama, Penn State, Texas, Tennessee, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M and Auburn. The first five teams on that list averaged more than 100,000 fans per game.
