Reminder: December 6 - A Conversation on Diversity in the Media

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today's media landscape looks unlike anything before -- but does it look more diverse? Join the discussion:

Journeys of Belonging: A Conversation on Diversity in the Media
Thursday, December 6 at 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
National Press Club
529 14th Street NW, 13th floor
Washington, DC
RSVP to Monica Ayala-Talavera monica@unaoc.org

In a world where news gathering and news consumption have changed radically, one would assume that the modern media landscape reflects greater diversity in both the stories covered and the people who cover them. But is that really the case?

Bringing together senior journalists and participants in the Journeys of Belonging video series, this panel discussion will explore how well today's media reflect cultural diversity. What new editorial initiatives strive to reflect diversity in the news? Can journalists improve understanding of diverse cultures? And if they can, is it their place to do so?

Join us for a lively and engaging discussion with journalism professionals and participants from our Journeys of Belonging video series:

Joe Klein (moderator), political columnist & editor at large, Time
Dori J. Maynard, president, Maynard Institute for Journalism Education
Alicia Stewart, CNN.com Identity editor
Aziz Abu Sarah, executive director, Center for World Religions, Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution, George Mason University
Elizabeth Birch, president of Birch & Company, former executive director of the Human Rights Campaign

We'll be live-tweeting the event, follow the #myjourneys hashtag

Journeys of Belonging is an original multimedia project that takes an in-depth look at the personal narratives of 17 women and men of diverse age, faith and cultural backgrounds. It has been jointly developed by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, the British Council, the University of Missouri School of Journalism and the Reynolds Institute.  Watch the videos.

With Octoblu emerging from stealth mode, it seemed like a good idea to talk to a couple of key people there. We were able to do just that with company co-founders Geir Ramleth and Chris Matthieu. Geir Ramleth serves as CEO. He was named to CIO Magazine's Hall of Fame in 2008, and ser...
“Vote early and vote often.” Back in the 1920s and ’30s, when neither election technology nor oversight were as effective as they are today, and the likes of Al Capone were at work gaming the system, this phrase wasn’t a joke. It was a best practice. If you want guaranteed results, wh...
If you listen to the persistent murmur in the market surrounding the Internet of Things right now, you'd believe that it's all about sensors. Sensors and big data. Sensors that monitor everything from entertainment habits to health status to more mundane environmental data about your h...
