MTN South Africa selects Celcite COPS to support network optimisation efficiency

Celcite Management Solutions (www.celcite.com), the world’s leading provider of automatic optimisation tools and services for wireless networks, announced today that cellular operator MTN South Africa has adopted Celcite’s COPS™-AIC software solution, as a service, towards maximising optimisation of its growing 2G and 3G networks.

MTN’s planning and optimisation engineers will use COPS-AIC software to complement their existing tools with further efficiencies to assist in accelerating the ongoing improvement of network quality indicators. More specifically it will assist with automatically diagnosing the overall root causes of network issues, and discriminating between RF and operational issues.

Through this additional automation being introduced, MTN subscribers can expect even further improved experience of world class network quality. MTN have always been pioneers in innovation, and further investment into proven optimisation solutions demonstrates MTN’s on-going commitment to quality and its customers.

“MTN was looking for a tool to empower its engineers and further improve efficiencies,” said Graham Kemp, Celcite’s Regional MD for Africa. “As networks become more complex, with multiple bands and carriers, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain and optimise these without the use of automation through intelligent correlation of diverse data sources. COPS-AIC will enable MTN to further optimise its 2G and 3G Radio networks, giving it an even more stable base from which to roll out additional 3G capacity, and also time bandwidth to optimise its new LTE network as it is rolled out.”

“The trial of COPS-AIC demonstrated impressive results over the limited trial area, with substantial improvements reported in network quality brought about by improved engineering efficiency.” said Jason Murray, Senior Manager: Radio Optimisation, MTN. “

About MTN South Africa

MTN South Africa was launched in 1994 after it received a license to roll out its GSM network the previous year. MTN South Africa is part of MTN Group, a multi-national telecommunications that boasts over 152 million subscribers across its company with operations in 21 countries in Africa and the Middle East. MTN South Africa itself provides voice, data and telemetry offerings and solutions to its 20 million customers in South Africa.

In July last year, MTN South Africa reaffirmed its technological leadership by announcing a pilot of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network around Gauteng. The pilot is the largest LTE rollout of its scale in Africa and spans the business hub of Gauteng with over 100 sites.
