Niklas Bjorkman wrote: Firstly I agree with your conclusion. NewSQL takes the best of the traditional databases and NoSQL databases to combine the benefits of both worlds. I do not agree that NewSQL vendors focus on giving scale-out features to transactional data. The NewSQL market is focusing on giving true ACID support combined with extreme performance, stepping away from the traditional relational structures in databases. A lot of developers appreciate the ease of accessing data using SQL and I think we will see more and more databases supporting standard SQL. As you said - NewSQL databases often maintain the...

Small Publisher Takes Advantage of Responsive Design and HTML5 to Ease Multi-Platform Woes

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 06/27/12 -- MIT Sloan Management Review (MIT SMR) yesterday released an MIT SMR web app for tablets, a responsive web design that uses HTML5 and is optimized for retina display. The new offering can be reached on any tablet at sloanreview.mit.edu. The product offers an example of the power behind tools that small, resource-constrained publishers can now use to distribute their content across different platforms.

The web app offers the entire MIT SMR content set, including both new and archived content. The MIT SMR digital team and its developer partner, Modern Tribe, saw the use of open web technologies, including WordPress as CMS, as a way for a small team to avoid the heavy resource requirements of supporting multiple platform apps, while at the same time offering an excellent reader experience.

"We set out to create a remarkable, unique, best-in-class tablet reading experience using the kind of open technology approach that MIT is known for," said Sean M. Brown, director of digital media for MIT SMR. "This product does that, while allowing our team to focus on content deployment and user experience instead of managing and supporting different technology stacks."

The launch of the web app is sponsored by SAS. The app's content is available according to the same access guidelines as MIT SMR's desktop site, with some content open to all, some open to registrants, and some open only to subscribers.

Other features of the web app include:

  • An immersive, lean back, approach, with an elegant and uncluttered design for readers.
  • Developed to work on all tablet devices; no downloads or updates required.
  • A unique slider menu that surfaces large groups of content with a swipe.
  • Retina display ready, featuring extensive use of photography to illustrate concepts.
